American Idol 14: Top 8 Girls - Songs Of Motown
After the guys gave us a somewhat interesting show, it is now time for the girls. Still don't like the format and the one show direction that American Idol is going in. When you make changes like that, it is time to throw in the towel. Nothing I can do about it so here is my take on the ladies. As always, my ranking goes from least favorite to favorite.
Alexis Gomez - Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch: Probably one of the worst that I have heard at this stage. It was just all over the place. It felt as if you were a kitten trying to be a tiger and failing miserably. I wanted someone to stop the music and say "We made a mistake. Come on up Lovey or Katherine". While that would have been mean, it would have been better than listening to this the entire way through. Just wasted a spot in my opinion.
Jax - Ain't No Mountain High Enough: Don't get so full of yourself or think that you are that unique that you need to go and change the song completely. That performance was unrecognizable to me. I did not like it at all. I liked her vocals but the arrangement just killed it for me. I understand wanting to make the song your own but changing the song that much can make me lose focus on your vocals. Just wasn't my cup of tea.
Maddie Walker - I'll Be There: Nice tone to your voice but for me, that is it. I feel like we are waiting for you to come into your own. All of the components are there but now, with some confidence, you need to put them all together. Once you start believing in yourself, you could take this whole competition.
Adanna Duru - Hello: SO MUCH DRAMA!!!! Definitely not necessary but I understand why you did it. The song seemed a little disjointed to me at time. Especially the transition after the awkwardly spoken "I Love You". Like where do you go from there? I can definitely hear a voice in there but I would suggest trying to tone down the theatrics. Just wasn't working for me. I do give you props for taking a risk and committing to it.
Loren Lott - I Wanna Be Where You Are: Moments of good and some moments of what are you doing up there???. I think that you need to really focus on getting some weight to your vocals. I can hear that you have potential for a fantastic voice but I hope that with some coaching you can own it! I enjoyed your performance. I thought that it was fun and it sounded decent.
Joey Cook - Shop Around: I just adore her. She seems so nice and genuine. I dig her style from actual clothing to song choice to singing. Just a quirky mess and I love it! She has made each song fit her without taking it out of the box so much. I would buy a ticket for her concert!
Tyanna Jones - Rockin' Robin: I just love that she stays true to herself and continues to be the teenager that she is. She made me like a song that normally despise. Especially hearing it sung on American Idol. Thanks Megan Joy lol. Anyway, this was a great performance from start to finish. Great song choice! Fantastic key! I love the way that her vibrato spins on her held notes. She seems to have mastered the control of it all. Funny she still comes across young but has the professionalism of a 40 year old singer. I just loved it!
Sarina-Joi Crowe - You've Really Got A Hold On Me: She is so fine tuned and unmatched. She just has this vocal confidence. She knows her voice to the T and she knows how to use it. I can see what Harry was talking about but I don't think that it was her. I believe that it was the guitar. It wasn't exactly tuned but she stuck to her guns and SANG that song. I can't wait to hear so much more from her!!!!!
Since we know that they are sending three to this Top 12 purgatory, I would send Alexis Gomez, Maddie Walker, and Adanna Duru. I think that they need one more shot to show that they belong in the top 12. The other 5 girls have shown, at some point in the competition that they deserve to be there.
So for me there were no causalities but I would have replaced a few. I am not upset by the eliminations. Shannon Berthiaume, you just needed more stage experience under your belt. Vocals were great but you looked so overwhelmed and out of sorts up there. Shi Scott, scream less, sing more. That is all it really boils down to. Katherine Winston, you let the big stage swallow you up but your vocal tone was so rich. Sad to see you go. Lovey James, I saw so much potential in you. I guess America did not feel the same. If I had one Wildcard spot to give away, I would give it to Lovey. She had some spunk and vocals that deserved to be showcased. Well until next week, where we have this wonky format. Just go back to the way it was. Sigh.
