American Idol Season 11: Top 5 British Pop and The 60's
Woo hoo TOP 5!!!! I love it when it gets to 5 for some reason!! By this time, we are so invested and we have an idea of who we would like to see win. So let's see how well these contestants stack up:
Skylar Laine - Fortunate Son: It was okay. I felt like it stayed on the same plane and never really lifted off. I was really hoping for a tender moment. On songs like this, your vocals tend to get a little screechy borderline grating. I would stay away from songs like this. Not saying that you shouldn't do uptempo but saying that you should do them in a comfortable range.
Phillip Phillips - Time Of The Season: Kind of a boring choice for you and it was just an okay vocal. Most of the falsetto notes were inaudible. The verses were better than the choruses but that is not saying much.
Phillip Phillips - The Letter: Actually a listenable performance from you. Yea maybe not the knockout vocal but I don't think that you will ever be able to deliver that. You are more style than actual vocal. Which is fine, I guess. This song had more variation and didn't sound exactly the same as your others.
Skylar Laine - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me: This is such a good song but this performance was so "nasal" that it was distracting. There were a few spots of good but other than that, it was just okay.
Hollie Cavanagh - River Deep Mountain High: On paper, I was so scared for you. But technically, it was a solid performance. Still didn't WOW me but it was good. Nice to see you making strides at this stage in the game.
Jessica Sanchez - Proud Mary: So it was not what I wanted it to be but it was still a great vocal. It had grit and power but it still kind of stayed on the same level for me.
Joshua Ledet - To Love Somebody: Very good song choice for you. Didn't feel as connected as some of your other songs. But overall, it was a stirring performance. Great job!!
Joshua Ledet - Ain't Too Proud To Beg: You gave this song the angst and soul that it needs plus some!!! I love it when contestants go ALL OUT with a song and you did just that. A lot of people say it is screaming but how else are you going to sing a song like that? Any other way would have been awful.
Hollie Cavanagh - Bleeding Love: Loved the arrangement and I loved your vocals. You are really showing everyone that you can hang with Jessica!!! Great job!!!
Jessica Sanchez - You Are So Beautiful: Wow what a pure and amazing vocal!!! The way that you milked and caressed the song is a true sign of a pro! Yea, that was a great one!!!
So I was not as pleased as I would have liked to have been. At the Top 5, they should be bringing their A game for each and every performance. I am hoping for a Bottom 2 of Skylar and Phillip. So honestly, I ready to see Skylar go home. She has had some great performances and now she has run her course. We shall see what happens!!!
