AMERICAN IDOL 12: Top 8 Songs from the Motor City
So the Idol contestants take on the Motor City aka Motown plus one Madonna song done as a duet. I will say that I was not looking forward to this. Most of the time the performances seem to be so cookie cutter and unoriginal. Hopefully I get out of this slump and hear some great singing!!!
SOLO PERFORMANCES:
Lazaro Arbos - For Once In My Life: Probably your best performance but that is not saying a lot. I feel like you are still out of your league but that was a good effort. It lacked depth and true commitment to the notes. It never felt grounded. It was breathy for the most part. Your best but not good enough to take the title.
Angie Miller - Shop Around: I don't like this arrangement at all. She didn't seem comfortable with it. It was pretty much all over the place. Definitely not my favorite.
Devin Velez - Tracks Of My Tears: The tone of your voice is awesome but what is behind the voice??? I never feel like you are emotionally attached to the songs. It is almost like you have studied the song and placed every single note. Unfortunately, it just didn't work for me.
Burnell Taylor - My Cherie Amour: Nice vocal. I wish that you had went further. It just felt very middle of the road. I wish that you had also picked a better song. The pronunciation of "-our" was grating on annoying. That tone is awesome though!!!
Candice Glover - I Heard It Through The Grapevine: Loved the bluesy approach. For some reason, I think that nerves removed the edge and confidence that you usually have. With that being said, it was still an amazing performance but I see where it could have been better.
Amber Holcomb - Lately: One of my favorite songs and you did it very well. Just so pristine and clear. I wish that I could see a lot more connection from you but the vocals are always slaying!!!
Janelle Arthur - You Keep Me Hanging On: Well well well, look who stepped it up! That was amazing. Had my attention for the entire song. The phrasing was awesome. And also props for surviving the curse of the song. Great performance!!!
Kree Harrison - Don't Play That Song: YESSS YESSS YESSS Bluesy, soulful, and entertaining. Loved it all the way!!! Awesome job!!!
GROUP PERFORMANCES:
Lazaro/Burnell/Devin - Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch: Whew what a mess. There were so many dropped lines, phrases, moments, and harmonies. No words. That was a mess.
Janelle/Kree - Like A Prayer: This was a little odd for me. One, I didn't get why they were doing the duo thing so early in the show. Two, having the two of them together made me realize how much they sound similar. There were moments of pretty good and then there were moments of forgetfulness when Janelle forgot to come in. Just didn't dig it.
Amber/Angie/Candice - I'm Going To Make You Love Me: I really liked this. If for nothing else but the harmonies at the end!!! Angie reminds me of a young Mariah during this. Amber was stunning and Candice just ripped it up. Great job!!!!
So if I had my way, LAZARO, ANGIE, and DEVIN would be my bottom 3. I doubt that LAZARO will go anywhere. His fans just love him too much. ANGIE had one bad performance and DEVIN has had lots of middle of the road performances. In a competition like this, one needs to be consistent and have some great moments along the way. I feel that DEVIN has not had his moment yet and will suffer because ANGIE has had some really great vocals. I am going to say that either LAZARO or DEVIN will be packing their bags tomorrow.
