American Idol 14: Top 11 Elimination/Top 10 Songs From The Movies
It took a lot for me to actually write this post. I think that I am pretty much over the show. The choices that they are making and the overall flow of the show is just not working for me this season. Everything seems too rushed and the performances are suffering because of that. On with my review. As always, my ranking goes from least favorite to favorite.
Daniel Seavey - Lost Stars: Hmmmm...after giving it a second listen, it wasn't as bad as the first time but it was still bad. The falsetto beginning was very weak and unsupported. You are just not ready for this. You need another year or two before you step back out there. I just don't see the appeal. I applaud your efforts but sometimes you just have to know you.
Tyanna Jones - Circle Of Life: This was the first time that I felt uncertainty in any of your performances. Out of tune on basically every phrase. I think that you pushed too hard and you ended up sharp in most places. I still love your artistry and performance ability but this song and performance was not it for you. I really hope that you have some voting fans out there.
Nick Fradiani - Danger Zone: Terrible song choice. The song did not allow you to showcase any artistry and range. Speaking of range, it seemed that you were struggling when you went to reach the top part of the song. I feel like you need a rerouting. Someone to get you off of the "bar tour" and get you into the artist realm.
Maddie Walker - Let's Hear It For The Boy: I liked this song choice. I know. I am in the minority here but I thought with the country arrangement, it suited Maddie very well. The bum last note was definitely noticeable but overall I thought that you did a good job! The circling camera was a bit nauseating but understand that you were trying to be playful.
Rayvon Owen - Stayin' Alive: There is no denying your incredible instrument. Did I want to hear 90% of the song in falsetto? Absolutely not. Did you nail it? Yes. The fact that you can do that is awesome but I wanted more. I didn't care for the arrangement at first but it grew on me. I want something with more depth from you. I need you to dig deeper. Find that "thing" that is you and incorporate it into your songs.
Adanna Duru - Love You I Do: Quite an ambitious song. This song takes powerhouse vocals and an attitude that can carry it. I think that you pulled it off. I could have stood more vocal strength and grit but you performed it! I am beginning to see the type of artist that you want to be and that is a good thing.
Jax - Grow Old With You: This was great for you this week. It showcased your voice in a cute adorable way and the performance let us see your personality. Much improved from last week's disaster. I loved every bit of it. Smart move to choose that song. Tugged right at the heart strings but still showed us everything you needed to.
Quentin Alexander - You're The One That I Want: Cool reimagining of the song. I totally got lost in your dramatic interpretation. I didn't hear where it was "horribly out of tune". I heard moments where you could have more of a tonal key locked. I think that you slayed the arrangement. Especially towards the end.
Joey Cook - Mad World: What a solemn, breathtaking performance. Just the overall delivery was stellar and haunting. Not a note out of place. Every word clear and present. Every emotion out on the table. You just internalized the entire song and made us each feel your thoughts. Just fantastic!!
Clark Beckham - Sunday Morning: Whew. I need a fan. That was masterful and full of finesse, musicianship, and creativity. I felt it from note one until the end. One of the great performances to ever grace the Idol stage. Keep delivering like that!
Well I was so happy to see Qaasim have to sing for the save. I knew in my heart of hearts that the judges wouldn't use it. I mean they didn't use it on one of the best vocalist last week because it was too early. Why would they use it on someone who has not "proven his vocal ability" yet? Well....I was wrong and furious AGAIN. American Idol judges used the save on the non singer but a great performer.....SIGH. Anyway, here is what I thought of his Save performance.
Qaasim Middleton - Come Together: Yes, one of my favorite songs but this dude is not a singer. He did so much with this performance. Just too over the top. Mic drop??? Really??? Ugh! I couldn't even get over his screaming and halfway attempt to sing the song in a singing competition. So over him.
There it is. My thoughts on this week on Idol. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper. I feel like the competition has gone astray. Who should go this week? Daniel and Qaasim. Who will go? Probably Nick or Tyanna or Maddie. I would hate to see any of those 3 go before Daniel and Qaasim but Daniel has the teen vote and Qaasim just came off of the save. His voters worked triple time to keep him in. Hopefully the Songs from the 80's will bring these contestants to life. I miss Sarina-Joi Crowe....
