American Idol 14: Top 8 Guys - Songs of Motown
I can not explain to you how much I hate this format. Like truly hate it. One, we do not to get to hear the contestants as much as possible. Two, we lose some awesome contestants in a brutal cut. Three, the contestants have to rush up on stage and perform after they find out if they made it through which leads to shaky, unsettled performances. More gripes after my commentary. As always, my ranking goes from least favorite to favorite!
Mark Andrew - Papa Was A Rolling Stone: Alright. Nice vocal tone. Safe paint by numbers performance. Yes the arrangement had color but the vocals did not match that. It was very haphazard and kind of lackadaisical in manner. Just okay.
Adam Ezegelian - I Want You Back: First part of the song was really good but then you lost me. Between the odd facial expressions, the screaming sort of melody, and the funky arrangement, it just didn't work. I appreciate your artistry but I need to hear more singing instead of growling. The attempted run at the end was a flat out mess. But all in all, you are interesting and you can tell that your voice is actually pretty good.
Nick Fradini - Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Decent vocal. Just ordinary. Nothing to go WOW about but nothing to send you home for. Definitely needs to spruce it up. Interesting voice but you just need to use it to your advantage by picking better songs.
Qaasim Middleton - I Wish: Great performer but vocals....where are they? I am all for having a good time and owning the stage but you are losing the key component here. There were bum notes all over. You mostly danced the entire song as opposed to singing with a dance breakdown. I wish that you could combine forces with some of the other male contestants. Then we would have the perfect mix of vocals and showmanship. I worry that America will vote you through based upon your dancing/performing and then when you need to deliver a solid vocal, you will lose your appeal.
Daniel Seavey - How Sweet It Is: The opening falsetto gave me great promise of what this song could be. It was a decent vocal. Nothing extremely bad except for that last note. I definitely think that you could stand for another year or so of vocal growth but you are here and you are working with what you got.
Quentin Alexander - Master Jammin': Nice vocal tone. Great style and confidence. I like that your voice is a cross between pop, indie, and r&b. Just kind of cool. There were a couple of bum notes but I think that was due to pushing. I mean, I don't know how you handled the stress of being the last guy called up. 5 guys 1 spot left. Yea I don't think that I would have given my best vocal. All in all, I am really pushing for you. I can see you growing in this competition.
Clark Beckham - Tracks Of My Tears: Some great moments in this vocal but that ending took me completely out of the song. It was unnecessary and just wrong. I do think that you need to lay off on the growling. I would love to hear a nice stand alone vocal from you at some point.
Rayvon Owen - My Girl: I could listen to him sing all day. I want him to amp it up a bit. He is making it look too easy and voters may think that he isn't working hard. Smooth tone. Clean runs. Nice transition to falsetto. I dig it.
Ugh I hate this part. Tonight we said goodbye to some awesome guys so abruptly. Michael Simeon, he had the cute factor going for him but he totally chose the wrong song. Riley Bria, another one that I thought would get the teen vote but I guess you have to prove that have a solid vocal. Trevor Douglas, I would love to be his best friend but unfortunately picked the wrong song. Now for the one that made me so MAD....SAVION WRIGHT. Man, he was the victim of song choice. He wanted this so badly especially after last year. I wanted him to at least make it to the Top 8 guys round. In my opinion, cut way too early and was grouped with Rayvon, who has the better voice. Alright ladies, it is your turn. Please no tragedies. I will protest if Sarina, Joey, Tyanna, or Jax get cut this early.
