American Idol 14: Top 8 Elimination/Top 7 Billboard #1 Hits
Billboard Number 1's. I always think that the Idol contestants will tackle songs that are out now but they tend to stay away from those. Which can be a good thing. This is such a wide spread theme. I am sure that some legal stipulations always get in the way. The Twitter save is back. I am guessing that this will be in effect until top 5. As always, my ranking goes from least favorite to favorite.
Jax - Poker Face: I didn't get it. Maybe the arrangement was too far removed from the original or the over affected vocals. It just wasn't my cup of tea. After you finished, I felt like "Was that it???". It was like a Beatles arrangement of a Lady Gaga song and it just didn't come together correctly. There were a lot of holes for me. Mainly in the bridge. Just didn't piece together well.
Nick Fradiani - Teenage Dream: I thought that this was OK. Just OK. Nothing really stood out for me. The vocals weren't solid enough for me to jump up and down but there were no major missteps. I feel like you need to find that song that will make you stand out or you could be going home very very soon.
Qaasim Middleton - Hey Ya: So this is probably the most vocal promise that you shown since you have been in the competition. Plus it was entertaining. There were a couple of iffy notes in your upper register but all in all a pretty good performance. Still not a fan of your vocals in the grand scheme of things but this is probably your best, in my opinion.
Joey Cook - Wrecking Ball: Good song selection. I loved the little changes you made in the rhythm and the melody towards the end. I just missed the continuity of the song. It didn't flow well. The choruses were their own islands. It was like you detached yourself from the emotion just so that you could get the notes out of the choruses. Good performance just not your best.
Quentin Alexander - Latch: Good song choice for you. It made you current but I still felt a lot of you in the performance. Falsetto wasn't as pleasing to the ears as I wanted it to be. You did feel grounded in this performance and it really made a difference. I think that you are starting to see yourself as an entertainer.
Rayvon Owen - Set Fire To The Rain: You know what I love about this Twitter save. It is putting the pressure on you and making you sing out of your comfort zone. I thought that you picked the right song and that you delivered a very solid vocal. Some of the upper notes were a little uncontrolled but the song as a whole was awesome!
Tyanna Jones - Stay: I could tell that you were emotionally connected from note one. Just totally sang from the heart. There was nothing more that I could have asked for from this performance. I got lost in it and that is what you want to do with a song like that. Make the audience part of the experience without forcing it. BRAVO!
Clark Beckham - Make It Rain: I have never heard this song before. But Clark....he sold it for me. He is someone that just sings each and every time that he gets up there. He doesn't show an ounce of nervousness or uncertainty. Can we talk about that run on "rain" about a minute and 45 seconds into the song???? Yes all day! I would like to see you take us on this journey via a faster song but keep delivering solid vocals!!
Well with Qaasim and Rayvon in the bottom two, the Twitter save got it right again. Qaasim is a great performer/showman but he needs to really work on perfecting his vocals. Rayvon delivered a powerful vocal and it outshined you even though this was definitely Qaasim's best. Unfortunately, I think that Rayvon may be in trouble again. It just seems like he can't catch a break. I think that Jax may be wearing thin along with Nick. Nick is so average to me that he gets lost amongst these unique singers. I would like to see Nick or Jax go but Rayvon is on borrowed time with his second trip to the bottom two.
