American Idol 15: Top 24 - 1st 12
Well from what I have been reading, the top 24 will be split into two groups. They will sing a solo and then duet with a former idol contestant. The judges will then decide on 7 from each group to move onto the next round. From the 14 contestants, America will vote in 8 contestants and the judges get to choose who gets the final two spots. From here on out, I will rank the performances from least favorite to favorite. Let's get going!
Emily Brooke - I Am Invincible: Trainwreck material unfortunately. She should have chosen another song. The lower part of her range was struggling big time. The held notes were good in the upper register but her pitch never settled.
Jordan Sasser - All By Myself: Hmmmm I didn't feel this at all. He went for notes and riffs that he did not own. Horrible song choice as well. Most of his notes were so strained and unsupported. It hurt me to watch him.
Gianna Isabella - I Put A Spell On You: This performance had moments but this was so immature in many aspects. I think that she needs to work on rounding that sound out. I still don't see her as an artist.
Thomas Stringfellow - Creep: Nice sense of his vocals. I wish that he wouldn't do that lift at the end of phrases. Other than that and a shaky beginning, I really fell into this performance.
James VIII - Love Lockdown: Nice arrangement. I appreciated the artistry but you went off the rails at times. His vocal tone is pretty good but a little affected.
Jenna Renae - My Church: A couple of pitch issues but performance was solid. Just came out the gates swinging. Energetic and solid.
Stephany Negrete - Mama Knows Best: She has the performance game on lock. I want to hear more vocal control from her. I just needed more authenticity from her. It seemed more like an act.
Avalon Young - Love Yourself: Her tone fit this song like a glove. Man, she seems so comfortable on stage. I think that she did a great job.
Jeneve Rose Mitchell - Angel: I finally felt connected to her. I don't know if it was the song or the emotion. She transitioned into her head voice very beautifully. Fantastic emotion throughout.
Sonika Vaid - Safe And Sound: Her voice. Just so so beautiful. Now I want her to take it to the next level. Connect more. I feel like if she does that, she will be unstoppable. Her vocals just draw me in.
Mackenzie Bourg - Say Something: I liked this. I liked the change in the melody and the connection to the song. The longing in his voice was so fitting. Great for him.
La'Porsha Renae - Proud Mary: As oversung as this song is, she breathed new life into it for me. She gave me a little bit of Tina and a lot of La'Porsha. That last running pass was AWESOME. I loved how into the performance she was.
IMO, tonight was good but I expected a lot better. Last season of an iconic show....these singers need to BRING IT. My picks to move on would be La'Porsha, Mackenzie, Sonika, Jeneve, Avalon, Stephany and here is where I am torn. Jenna, James, Thomas, and Gianna were okay but it all comes to what is right for the show. I would pick Jenna or James. Thomas is like a poor man's Mackenzie. Gianna is okay but she really really has some work to do. My worry is that Gianna will get the pass due to her mother's fame. I would definitely pass on Jordan and Emily. Both of them tanked during the live show. That is how I see it all.
Until next time.......
