American Idol 15: Wildcard/Top 10 Performances
This is where the fun really begins. America gets a say in this...FINALLY! Not a fan of saving 4 right from the jump. Clearly the judges want them to be the Top 4. The other contestants are going to have to play catch up. Kind of unfair but I guess you have to go with the punches. So with La'Porsha, Dalton, Trent, and Olivia safe, the remaining 10 have to sing for American's vote! As always, I will rate performances from least favorite to favorite.
Jeneve Rose Mitchell - Ring Of Fire: Nope nope nope. I can't get with this. Her vocals were so underwhelming. There was not a second of this that I enjoyed. Especially when she attempted to go higher in her register....nope nope nope.
Manny Torres - Master Blaster: Well this just showed your vocal weakness IMO. It was choppy and inconsistent. Very talk sung. I didn't get anything new or different from that performance. When you held out the note towards the end, I put my hand over my mouth because it was pretty under key and not flattering.
Jenn Blosil - True Colors: Why aren't you living up to my expectations??? I loved loved loved you during your audition but now you leave a lot to be desired. A whole lot. You are not sustaining notes. You are literally squeaking around the melody. You are relying on your character to get you through but I want Jenn from the audition back. So frustrating because I had you as one of favs during Hollywood week.
Thomas Stringfellow - The Story Of My Life: Bit of a sloppy vocal in spots. The "yipping"....please stop it! I feel like if he would do away with that, he could really focus on landing the pitch. The follow through is just as important as the attack. Find a middle ground and own it. Vocal tone is good. Watch your pronunciation of words. You come off very manufactured. Like you took a piece from this artist and a piece from this artist. Find you. I don't know who Thomas is at all.
Lee Jean - Make It Rain: There were some obvious pitch problems throughout. The choruses never got up there. I think that your tone is unique but I also feel that you may need a little more time to season. Overall this performance didn't gel for me.
Gianna Isabella - Put A Spell On You: Good vocal in spots. I still didn't connect. You made some choices that caused this to seem very mechanical. You can sing but now I need you to focus and internalize it more. I could see and hear you thinking about the song. Swim in that song and really feel it. With that vocal potential, you could really take your performance to new heights.
Tristan McIntosh - What Hurts The Most: For the first time, I felt her singing. Yea, there were some mechanical movement and vocal choices. When she breathes in, she slouches. That could be where a lot of her pitch problems stem from. She has so much potential but she just needs to fix a few things and she can go far.
Sonika Vaid - I Surrender: She has an amazing voice. But I really really want her to have more umph behind it. I feel like she sits back in it too much. Let us see and hear you work for it. Don't make it seem so effortless that we think that you have no feeling. While I look forward to hearing you each week, I look forward to the week when that switch clicks on and you give us a performance of a lifetime.
Avalon Young - Yo! Excuse Me Miss: She is so comfortable on that stage and her vocal flow reflects that. She doesn't come off as trying or robotic. Just smooth. Maybe her vowels at time were a little too spread but that didn't detract from her overall performance.
MacKenzie Bourg - Roses: I loved it the first time. I am super loving it this time. So good. So good. I need a recording of it now. I have nothing more to say. America, don't let this one go.
I will say that the performances were a skosh better than the Top 24 performances. I wish that they got to sing new songs. This season is making me cringe in many ways. Recycling songs, taking power away from the fans, and stacking the season with producer/judge favorites. All of this and we have only had 3 weeks of live shows. Down to my results!
Who should definitely go
Manny
Jeneve
On the fence
Jenn
Lee
Thomas
Gianna
Tristan
Definitely should stay
Sonika
Avalon
MacKenzie
I believe that America will send Manny, Thomas, Lee, and Jeneve home after the performances tonight. I would like to exchange Lee for Jenn but that isn't happening. And I really wanted to hear Trent, Olivia, and La'Porsha tonight. Frustrated lol.
Until next time.....
