American Idol 15: Top 10 Elimination/Top 8
Double elimination tonight! More than likely, someone that I was rooting for will be going home. It just always happens that way. I am hoping that they blow me away. As always, I rank the performances from least favorite to favorite.
Gianna Isabella - If I Ain't Got You: Nope. This song was like something that she probably sings at every family event to show that she has the family talent. She landed about 60% of her notes. No connection at all. Yea I was not feeling this at all.
Dalton Rapattoni - Radioactive: I am not digging this arrangement. I appreciate that you want to change up songs. But I think that this was a stretch. The original has a drive that this arrangement did not have. To me, that really showcased your lack of range. I was really bored by it all.
MacKenzie Bourg - I Wanna Dance With Somebody: Another arrangement that I could have done without. Something was missing. I appreciate the artistry but it didn't do any favors for you. I thought that the background singer drowned him out. I liked his vocals but it just didn't sit well with me.
Avalon Young - Earned It: I am on the fence here. I liked the song choice for her. I thought that her vocal tone was a little too spread at times. It felt very immature in tone. I liked some of the musical choices but wasn't blown away by it all.
Lee Jean - Use Somebody: For the first time, I really felt this performance. The song really suited your voice like a glove. I loved the musical choices that you made. I definitely heard the storytelling in the voice this week. I just liked it overall.
Sonika Vaid - Since U Been Gone: I thought that this was a nice performance. I can still see her thinking about her moves and stage presence. Her vocal was good but just void of looseness.
Olivia Rox - Trouble: The tone of her voice is just awesome! She has spunk and energy. She has never faltered from really going for notes. She really knew what to do with her vocals here! When she went to her head voice and then belted it at the end...come on through. Not perfect towards the end but she had fire in her! Song choice wasn't great. But this was a great performance. I hated the judge's critiques for her. Straight up threw her under the bus.
Trent Harmon - When A Man Loves A Woman: Yay! The facial expressions were dialed down and I could actually watch him! His vocal was gorgeous. Maybe a little too much vibrato at times but simply very musical. I really appreciated what he did with the song.
La'Porsha Renae - Halo: Yes! This was awesome! The background with the angel wings fitted perfectly to her: GENIUS! The rising platform: BRILLIANT! But then she said "Idol I can see your halo" and it kind of took me out of it. Just personal preference but when someone in a competition brings the competition literally in a song, I get turned off. I am sure that I can get over it lol. The ending didn't really connect for me. It took me out of it again. I love love love me some La'Porsha but this wasn't the best for me.
Tristan McIntosh - Go Rest High On That Mountain: Wow...where did that come from?? I loved every moment of it. Goosebumps. She is so much at home on that piano. Gosh. I wish that she could stay there. Her pitch was way better and her vocal tone was clear. Fantastic!
So the bottom 3 was Olivia, Avalon, and Gianna. The judges chose to save Avalon. While I love the style that Avalon represents, Olivia was clearly the better singer. UGH......Olivia gave a great body of work during her time here. Even the snippet of her original was great. 3 weeks straight, I had her pegged to win the whole thing. Her vocals were ABSOLUTELY ridiculous. For her to be 17, she knew what to do with her voice. Frustrating. Life goes on. Gianna definitely had to go. She just wasn't ready. Dalton and MacKenzie need to do something to shake up the norm. Sonika lost a little from last week but I think that she has enough to stick around. Lee is still in trouble. I think that Tristan redeemed herself. Will it be enough for America to forgive her previous rounds? I am sure that it will. La'Porsha and Trent have nothing to be worried about. Avalon skated by. Her song wasn't solid enough for me to vote for her. I am really bummed about Olivia. I wanted to hear more from her. 9th was not where I envisioned her.
Until next time........
