American Idol 15: Top 4 Elmination/Top 3

Well they were able to squeeze 10 songs in this week. Why couldn't Sonika sing last week??? Okay I had to get that out. Just puzzling. We get three songs from the contestants.  A hometown dedication, Scott's choice, and judge's choice. Very interested to hear how they do with each song. As always, I rank the performances from least favorite to favorite.

Dalton Rapattoni - Everybody Wants To Rule The World: The vocal just suffered so much with the performance quality. The key was too low and the dramatics overshadowed the vocals. He tried to work with what he was given. The beginning in the audience was so odd. It frightened me a little.

Dalton Rapattoni - Calling You: I was with in the beginning but things got out of hand quickly. He is out of his league here. His vocals are no where near polished or ready. It was breathy and just not my cup of tea. I am trying to get on board with him but just not a fan of his singing. He doesn't pick songs that allow him to really SANG. For me, the very last American Idol has to be able to hold a candle to the previous winners in the vocal department. If he were to win, he would be ranked 15th out of all of the Idol winners. IJS.....

Dalton Rapattoni - Dancing In The Dark: I was totally digging the beginning. It allowed me to hear his vocals, which were not bad. He should have stayed in that lane for the entire song. Instead he went for the punk fast tempo version. He was out of breath. Now can we talk about how the judges say that he is a great interpreter of lyrics.....REALLY??? They are just trying to find something for him to latch onto for him. I don't get it. You say that he is a good singer with some great singers but you want him to go on to the finale.....UGH. I am trying so hard to not sound like a bitter person but I am over the judges. Harry said that he makes up for lack of vocal ability with his lyrical connection. Nope...this is still a singing competition. When the judges make comments like that, the voting audience doesn't think that the best singer should stick around and go for personality and appeal first. I am on a tangent. On to the next one.

Trent Harmon - Drink You Away: There were moments that worked with this song but the actual whole performance wasn't super amazing. It took a minute for it to lock in rhythmically. I didn't feel the groove until halfway through the first verse. I still enjoyed the vocal but just not as much. There is no denying that confidence that you have gained over the course of the competition. Yes, J Lo was right, you are starting to sing like a winner.

MacKenzie Bourg - Hallelujah: On paper, I was on board. Even though, I feel that this song should be retired from all singing reality tv shows. Just a beautiful song and most people do it well. Probably one of MacKenzie's best vocals. I loved that the yearning in his voice came back. That is what I have been missing for weeks.

La'Porsha Renae - Hello: I liked the vocal but wasn't completely blown away. I loved her range in this but maybe I am over the song lol. There is no doubt that she can SANG her face. This performance just didn't wow me like the others.

Trent Harmon - Tennessee Whiskey: If anyone was going to do this song, it had to be you. You are soulful. You are artistic. You possess a certain stage presence that just works. When you hit that a cappella section towards the end, it was genius. The whole performance just flowed so well. Fantastic work.

La'Porsha Renae - Stay With Me: Look here. She may not have wanted to sing this song but she SANG the mess out of it. Yes, there was no emotional connection but she executed the vocal with a vigor and push that it needed. I have never heard it before and she made me want to look up different versions. Every run and line had so much power. So good!

La'Porsha Renae - Glory: That is how you interpret a song. She had my attention from note one and kept me on the edge of my seat. This song had arc and emotion. The whole performance worked. The fog, the background singers, the dress, and the drum line! All of it helped to enhance her vocal. She felt empowered up there and it came through in her voice.

Trent Harmon - Waiting Game: Never has a song fit him better. Never heard it before so it felt like an original. The ease of his falsetto is sickening! He totally owned the lyrics. This was lyrical interpretation at it's best. The lift in his voice did so much to help sell this song. Fantastic vocal!

So here we are Top 3. Based on last week's performances, MacKenzie was the right person to go home. Now I just need a Trent/La'Porsha finale. If that is the case, I don't care who wins. I just need the two best vocalist to make it into the finals. I need to see a vocal showdown! Dalton is good, cute, and popular with the strongest voting population for the show. I worry about that. Especially with MacKenzie gone. I need Trent/La'Porsha....I just do.

Until next time.......
