The Voice 10: Top 9
Since I am a week late, let's get down to business. Like always, I will rank the performances from least favorite to favorite.
Nick Hagelin - Hold On, We're Going Home: I hate this song choice period. I am glad that he gave us a good mix of natural and falsetto voice. That being said, you can hear the weaknesses in both. I just don't know if you can continue to have what it takes to make it further in this competition. The vocals just aren't ready.
Paxton Ingram - I Wanna Dance With Somebody: I was digging the beginning but then you lost me with the arrangement and the whiny vocals. It felt very labored. I wanted it to end because you didn't make each transition fresh. You could have gone the extra mile with this song. Just didn't sell it enough for me.
Mary Sarah - My Church: Love your tone but I wish that you would put more of yourself into these performances. You have not lived up to your initial audition yet. I remember feeling like you were so fresh and different. Now, I couldn't pick you out of a line up of Nashville hopefuls. There is something special in there but you have to find a way to bring it to the forefront of your performances. Maybe stray away from the country songs.
Alisan Porter - Cryin': Actually liked the song choice for you. I thought that your performance was 90% there. You showed lack of vocal control on some of the higher notes. They tended to come off shaky and pushed. Don't get so caught up in the energy of the song that you forget to focus on vocal technique.
Adam Wakefield - Love Has No Pride: Solid song choice with an outstanding vocal. One of my issues is that your songs are starting to sound the same. Yes, you have an awesome voice but I need you to switch it up. Keeping it fresh is going to be the hardest thing for you.
Laith Al-Saadi - We've Got Tonight: Now this is easy listening. So smooth and nurturing. His voice was just wrapped so tightly around the song. Definitely his best vocal. Yes it is a simple song but he delivered it with so much passion that the repetitiveness didn't bother me.
Bryan Bautista - 1+1: One of my favorite songs ever. I loved what you did with the interpretation. I could not only feel the passion in your performance but I could hear it in your voice. Perfect key for you. I thoroughly enjoyed that performance. Especially the section at the back end of the performance.
Shalyah Fearing - A Change Gonna Come: I have never been on board with this song. I felt like no one could compare to Sam Cooke. This performance is definitely one of my favorites. She embodied the spirit of the song. She sang for blood but was able to pull back. I loved the little growl moments. And can we talk about that dress......GORGEOUS!!!
Hannah Huston - Say You Love Me: Oh my goodness! SANG GIRL!!! Perfect song choice for her. She emoted right on through that song with such ease. I loved the different colors to her voice. She gave the song an arc that tugged right at the heart strings. When she went to her power spot, she dug so deep. I love the little nuances to her vocals. She can transition so well. She came to win!!!!
Hannah, Shalyah, and Bryan are slaying the game. I loved their performances this week. I would be okay if Nick or Paxton went home this week.
